Long Beach State’s Misty May sat on the bench and watched as Shawnee Hayes made her career debut at setter. Hayes, who had not played at setter at any level, had 61 assists and led the 49ers to an 11-15, 11-15, 15-13, 15-8, 15-8 victory over 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara Saturday night at Santa Barbara.

“Shawnee has never set, not in high school, club or college,” Coach Brian Gimmillaro said. “It’s remarkable, I can’t believe Shawnee can do that after never doing it before.”

Shawnee, who was a defensive specialist, started for the injured May, who will be examined on Monday by team orthopedist Peter Kurzweil.

The victory was the first for the third-ranked 49ers (25-0, 12-0) in Santa Barbara since 1992. It also was the first home loss for the Gauchos (17-7, 9-3) this season.

Jenn Snyder had 20 kills and 23 digs for Long Beach. Teammate Jessica Alvarado had 14 kills and 24 digs.
