People 50 or older have personal histories that can teach valuable lessons to succeeding generations, Shelley Hellen says.

“I feel very strongly that seniors have a legacy to pass on to their families and to the community as a whole,” said Hellen, a senior services coordinator for the city.

To help them do that, she is teaching a series of free classes on Thursdays to help seniors write or tape their life stories.

The classes, from 10 a.m. to noon, are at the Cypress Senior Center, 9031 Grindlay St., through Dec. 12. They are open to anyone 50 or older.

“In an informal setting, you will be guided to investigate and develop your personal history from a series of questions, choose a media format, gather supporting materials, and select a presentation format,” Hellen said.
