Westminster Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Share

Despite some sloppiness and an offense that made only cameo appearances, Westminster kept its slim playoff hopes alive with a 16-7 victory over Ocean View Friday on the Lions’ home field.

Westminster (3-6, 2-2) can earn a playoff berth with an upset of Servite (8-1, 4-0) next week. More realistically, the Lions have to hope Ocean View can knock off Saddleback (6-3, 2-2) to force a three-way tie for third place.

“We played real sloppy at times and real well at times,” Westminster Coach Stan Clark said. “We played well enough to win, and I’m proud of the kids.”

The Lions took the lead two plays into the second quarter, when Shaun Spradling found Chris Brewer on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Ocean View (2-7, 1-3) answered with a 10-yard scoring pass from Jeff Taylor to Leland Washington to tie the score at 7.

The Lion defense held the Seahawks to four net yards after halftime. Spradling, who completed only one pass in the first half, completed all four attempts on the opening drive of the second half. The last of those went to Erick Arthur, who made a one-handed catch on the receiving end of a 19-yard scoring play.
