Children Try Life in Ancient Egypt

Studying the ancient land of the mummies needn’t be deadly. Especially for children.

Today, the San Diego Museum of Man at Balboa Park opens a permanent exhibit where students can “decode” hieroglyphics, bake Egyptian-style bread, build a model of a pyramid, make beads and dress like ancient Egyptians, among other activities.

It all happens at the Children’s Discovery Center, which includes a living room, family shrine, patio and work area modeled on Egyptian homes more than 3,500 years old. It is designed for children ages 6 to 13.

The center is reserved for school and community groups on weekday mornings. It is open to the public 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free with museum admission. Information: (619) 239-2001.
