SHOWS FOR YOUNGSTERS AND THEIR PARENTS TOO : TLC offers a class act with ‘School Stories’; TNT offers ‘Toon Special’; KCOP’s literary ‘Twist’

A collection of animal friends sing and dance in the animated weekly series Adventures of Oliver Twist, based on Charles Dickens’ classic novel (KCOP, Sundays at 8 a.m.). Oliver, a 12-year-old with eyes like saucers and a big heart, will stop at nothing until he finds his long-lost mother. For ages 5 to 10.

Produced in partnership with the National Education Assn., School Stories provides a unique look at education in today’s classrooms (The Learning Channel, Sundays at 9:30 a.m.). This week’s “Class Act: A Teacher Profile” looks at a high school English literature teacher in Rhode Island who rewards her students for exemplary behavior with ballads sung in her own lyric soprano. Science is brought to life with celebrity guests, exciting locations and music video parodies in new episodes of Bill Nye the Science Guy (KCAL Sundays at noon). This week, Bill digs into the science of archeology, and “Home Improvement’s” Richard Karn drops by to check things out. The weekly music video is “We’re Diggin’,” a parody of Bob Marley’s “We’re Jammin’.” For ages 6 to 14.

Goofy, the lovable Disney mutt, has the leading role in A Goofy Movie (Disney Channel, Sunday at 7 p.m.). Goofy takes his son Max on a fishing trip to try to bridge the generation gap with the teenager, but Max wants no part of it. He would rather attend a concert in Los Angeles. For ages 7 to 12.

TNT Toons Special starts with “The Secret of NIMH,” the 1982 animation film based on Robert C. O’Brien’s children’s novel about a band of intelligent field mice attempting to relocate before a farmer plows over their turf (TNT, Saturday at 10 a.m.). Toon specials continues with “The Cat in the Hat” at noon, “Horton Hears a Who” at 12:30, “Daisy Head Mayzie” at 1 p.m. and “The Grinch Grinches Cat in the Hat” at 1:30 p.m. For ages 4 to 10.
