Ex-Councilman Snyder Suffers Heart Attack on 64th Birthday

Influential lobbyist Arthur K. Snyder, a former Los Angeles city councilman and a key figure in a high-profile campaign money laundering case, suffered a heart attack over the weekend while vacationing in a Sierra Nevada resort town, his attorney said Monday.

Snyder, one of City Hall’s most powerful insiders and fund-raisers for three decades, was stricken late Saturday--his 64th birthday--at Mammoth Lakes, attorney Mark Geragos said Monday.

Snyder was flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno, where he was in the cardiac intensive care unit and undergoing tests to determine the extent of damage to the heart, Geragos said. He added that Snyder was alert and conscious.

A hospital spokeswoman said Snyder was listed in serious condition Monday.

In September, the former Eastside councilman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor conspiracy and money-laundering charges in one of the most ambitious political corruption cases undertaken by the district attorney’s office in recent years. The negotiated settlement fell short of the felony conviction that prosecutors had vigorously sought. Sentencing was set for Nov. 22.
