Television networks fear that the precedent of withholding for a few hours information already known to their reporters may ultimately endanger the republic. Thus they justify their calling East Coast elections before polls close in the West. Aren’t these the same networks that, along with the local stations they own, regularly raise viewers’ curiosity around 8:45 p.m. with a teasing partial story? And then supply the answer at 11 p.m. or in the next day’s morning news?
