Share

Edison bolted to a first-quarter lead, then shifted to cruise control for a 41-0 victory over Marina in the Sunset League finale for both Friday night.

The Chargers’ Alex Romero ran the game’s opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown to give Edison a 7-0 lead.

The Chargers (6-4, 2-3 in league) then recovered a fumble on Marina’s first possession of the game, getting the ball at the Vikings’ 38-yard line. Six plays later, Jeff Grady threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Boerner for a 14-0 lead with 8:47 remaining in the first quarter.

Marina’s offense faltered throughout the game. Viking running back Doug Fifita fumbled three times, resulting in 21 Charger points, and quarterback Jeff Grady completed only one pass for four yards. Marina finished 1-9, 0-5.

Despite the victory, Edison is not assured of a wild-card playoff spot. The Chargers were 4-1 in nonleague games, losing only to Capistrano Valley. The Chargers went 2-3 in one of the toughest leagues in the county.

On Friday, the Chargers increased their lead to 21-0 on a four-yard run by Romero, who also had four receptions for 76 yards.

Edison’s Josh Kogler carried the ball 20 times for 156 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
