A Blow Against Teen Drinking

Re “Shopkeeper Sold Liquor in Desert Crash, Jury Finds,” Oct. 4:

Thumbs up to the Fullerton Municipal Court jurors who convicted liquor store Me-N-Paul’s owner Masood Zaman of a misdemeanor and the Alcoholic Beverage Control who decided to restrict sale of alcohol for 30 days and mandate the transfer of the license. Zaman was found guilty for selling 12-packs of beer to minors, who were in an alcohol-related car crash that killed four Katella High School students on July 29, 1995.

Such illegal sales contribute to the growing number of youth who purchase alcohol. According to one California study, 66% of teens can buy their own booze. As a Fullerton resident and a professional in the alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention field, clearly the issue of youth access to alcohol is one that needs to be addressed.

The escalating problem of selling alcohol to youth in California calls for stiffer regulation of Orange County liquor outlets and increased enforcement of existing laws. However, I want to commend all the responsible businesses in Anaheim that refuse to sell alcohol products to minors.
