From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Latino students are no longer a minority at Florida International University and cannot qualify for scholarships based on ancestry. Officials at the state college in Miami told the state Board of Regents that Latinos make up 49% of the student body and do not meet the new federal standards for being underrepresented, the Miami Herald reported. Toni Margulies-Eisner, an assistant vice president at FIU, told the newspaper that the school would continue to offer scholarships for underrepresented minorities. The college now has an enrollment of 27% white non-Latino students and 14% black students, she said.
