Democrats won their 42nd seat in the 80-member Assembly and Republicans added one more seat in the Senate and Assembly on Monday, leaving just four races in the Nov. 5 election still in doubt.

The latest winners were Republicans Bruce McPherson of Santa Cruz for the state Senate and Lynne Leach of Walnut Creek for the Assembly and Democrat Dennis Cardoza of Merced for the Assembly.

The best-known politicians still waiting to learn their fate were Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti, who held a 0.015% lead over challenger John Lynch, and Republican U.S. Rep. Robert K. Dornan, who trailed challenger Loretta Sanchez by 665 votes in their Orange County race.

One state Senate race and one Assembly race were too close to call Monday as the statewide vote count narrowed to a final 100,000 or so absentee or other late ballots.

About 10 million votes were cast two weeks ago.
