Ex-Dodger Charlie Neal, World Series Standout, Dies

Former Dodger infielder Charlie Neal, a standout in the 1959 World Series, died of heart failure on Monday, the team said. He was 65.

Neal spent eight years in the major leagues, compiling a batting average of .259 with 113 doubles, 38 triples, 87 home runs and 391 runs batted in.

Neal hit .370 with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs to help the Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox in six games in the 1959 World Series.

Neal, who died in Dallas, is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Lockhart and Debbie Powers.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at the Church of the Living God in Dallas.

The Dodgers also announced that Jim Baxes, another former infielder, died of heart failure last Thursday in Garden Grove. He was 68.

Baxes spent 10 seasons in the Dodgers’ minor league organization and played in 11 games for the Dodgers in 1959.
