Libraries May Soon Offer Sunday Hours

Share

For the first time in 18 years, the city’s two public libraries plan to offer patrons Sunday hours, starting in January.

The Mesa Verde and downtown branches would be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. A $68,547 grant from the county and reshuffling of hours on other days should make the changes possible, officials said.

Also in the proposal are plans to boost the Thursday schedule, now 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., to 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The City Council agreed this week to earmark the county money for longer hours and to help pay for a staff librarian position. Earlier proposals to use at least some of the Orange County Public Library System money to expand collections were tabled in favor of longer hours.

Before the changes take hold, County Librarian John M. Adams said, his office will check the city’s directive to make sure the plan is financially feasible.

The new Sunday schedule, if granted final approval by the county, would be good at least until the start of the fiscal year in July.
