Shakur Estate Ordered to Pay $16.6 Million

A woman who was shot and paralyzed at a Tupac Shakur concert has won a $16.6-million judgment against the slain rap star’s estate.

Jacquelyn McNealey, 27, was wounded by a stray bullet at a Shakur concert in a Pine Bluff nightclub in 1993. The bullet damaged her spinal cord, leaving her paralyzed below the chest.

Her lawyer, David Mitchell, said Wednesday that he sued the nightclub, Shakur’s estate and his record companies because Shakur “was taunting the crowd; he created a riotlike atmosphere which ended up in a shooting.”

Judge H. A. Taylor granted the full damages sought from the estate on Monday after Shakur’s representatives failed to appear at the hearing.

Attorney Richard Fischbein, who said he was appointed administrator of Shakur’s estate about two weeks ago, said he knew nothing about the lawsuit or the judgment. Shakur was killed in September.

Mitchell said the nightclub settled for $500,000. Claims against Death Row Records, its former distributor Interscope Records and Time Warner are still pending, the attorney said.

The gunman was prosecuted and is in prison.
