Princeton is Bob Knight’s kind of basketball team: fast, precise and unrelenting on defense.

“After the game, I said, ‘I would rather be coaching a team that works and moves as hard and as fast as you guys do than our team right now.’ That’s from a coaching standpoint,” Knight said after his Indiana Hoosiers beat the Tigers, 59-49, in first-round play Wednesday at Bloomington, Ind.

Neil Reed had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 22 Hoosiers (2-0), who held the Tigers to nine points over the final 12 minutes.

It was the first game for Princeton Coach Bill Carmody, who succeeded Pete Carril. Carmody was an assistant to Carril for the last 14 years and succeeded him after he retired.

No. 10 Duke 89, St. Joseph’s 60--Trajan Langdon excelled in his return after a 14-month layoff, scoring 20 points as the Blue Devils defeated the Hawks at Durham, N.C.

The Blue Devils, wearing black uniforms trimmed in blue and white for the first time, have won 101 of the last 102 nonconference games in Cameron Indoor Stadium and their last 15 season openers.

Langdon, who redshirted a season ago after injuring a knee during a summer basketball tour and undergoing surgery, keyed a 21-2 second-half run.

Evansville 65, Drexel 61--Evansville’s Jeff Layden batted away a layup attempt with 21 seconds left to help the Aces win at Evansville, Ind.

With the score 61-58, Drexel’s Greg Gaffney passed to teammate Jeff Myers in the lane on a fast break. But Layden, a 6-foot-9 senior, broke up the play and forced the turnover. The Aces made four free throws to clinch the victory.

Oklahoma State 71, St. Mary’s 70--After leading by as many as 16 in the first half, the Cowboys needed a three-point shot by Jason Skaer with less than a second remaining to win at Stillwater, Okla.

The basket by Skaer, from the right wing with .2 seconds remaining, was only the Cowboys’ third field goal in the final 7:55.

The Cowboys play the winner of the UCLA-Tulsa game.

Iona 79, Seton Hall 66--Mindaugas Timinskas scored 19 points and all of Iona’s starters scored more than 10 points in embarrassing Seton Hall at East Rutherford, N.J.

Seton Hall guard Shaheen Holloway had 18 points in his debut.

St. Louis 63, Arkansas Little Rock 57--Junior-college transfer Rasheed Malik scored 15 points to lead the Billikens at St. Louis.

Muntrelle Dobbins of Arkansas-Little Rock had 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Vanderbilt 74, Valparaiso 66--Billy DiSpaltro scored 22 points and Pax Whitehead had 14 points after Coach Jan van Breda Kolff revoked his suspension, helping the Commodores hold off the Crusaders at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt nearly squandered an 18-point lead as Chris Artis scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half and cut the Commodores’ lead to two. But Whitehead, who was supposed to complete a two-game suspension imposed for his arrest last May on charges of drunken driving and unlawful possession of a gun, hit a three-pointer at the 2:29 mark.

The charges against Whitehead were dropped.
