Big Field Turns Turkey Trot Into Quite a Feast

Every running event should have the problems faced by the Dana Point Turkey Trot.

In 20 years, the 5K and 10K runs have grown into a holiday tradition attracting runners from more than 30 states.

That popularity, of course, comes at a price.

“We’re definitely pushing our limits in size,” event director Herb Massinger said. “It’s a nice problem to have.”

In 1984, the race drew about 600 people. By the next year, participants had increased to 1,200. And last year, the field was only a few runners short of 4,000.

Race director Patti Short says the introduction of shorter races for children has further widened the race’s appeal. Kids can run a quarter-mile, half-mile or mile.

The Turkey Trot takes runners through the harbor area, with the course beginning and ending at Dana Point Harbor Drive and Golden Lantern. The 5K starts at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 28, with the 10K at 8.

Short said race organizers “will at some point try and figure out a way to continue to grow. It becomes an issue of where we can go and how many roads we can close.”

The race, sponsored by Ocean Spray, is a fund-raiser for the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce. Some of the proceeds will benefit Children’s Home Society of California.

Cost of the 5K or 10K is $22 before Nov. 21. The shorter races cost $15. For more information, call (714) 496-1555.
