Adult Businesses May Be Forced to Move

Seven adult businesses along Garden Grove Boulevard could soon be looking for new quarters if the City Council approves an ordinance limiting such enterprises to certain areas.

At Tuesday’s meeting, council members are set to vote on a plan that would move aggressively to relocate them off the boulevard by July 1999.

City Manager George Tindall said studies of Garden Grove Boulevard have shown that a certain “synergy” exists between the area’s adult bookstores and prostitution.

The new ordinance would help reduce that by putting some distance between the various types of adult-oriented businesses, he said.

Zoning changes made to Garden Grove Boulevard more than four years ago allowed the city to proceed with stricter limits on such businesses. Those rules declare them to be nonconforming operations. The additional law would require them to move.

Cities may not ban adult businesses such as nude bars and X-rated theaters but may place strict limits on where and how they operate.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave. Information: (714) 741-5100.
