Arthur G. Hueg of Camarillo, a volunteer with the Food Share regional food bank of Ventura County, died in a Santa Paula hospital Thursday as the result a traffic accident. He was 72.

Hueg, a former lab technologist at Camarillo State Hospital, had been a Food Share volunteer since 1990, driving a delivery van for the organization’s Brown Bag program, said volunteer coordinator Dan Williams.

“Brown Bag is where low-income seniors get a bag of groceries each and every week,” said Williams. “Art had just delivered that food to Piru when he got in the accident.”

Hueg was born March 18, 1924, in Buffalo, N.Y., and was a 35-year resident of Ventura County.

Williams said Hueg embodied the philosophy that nothing should be wasted. Not only did Hueg recycle all he could from his personal life, he also coordinated the organization’s recycling project--with all the funds donated to Food Share, Williams said. “It amounted to hundreds of dollars each month,” he said.

Hueg was an avid stamp collector and travel activity coordinator for the Evergreen Group Camp at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Camarillo. He was a volunteer at Rancho del Rey Christian Center in Oak View, and in 1984 was a volunteer at the Olympic rowing and kayak venue at Lake Casitas.

“Art was just a tremendous person,” Williams said. “He was very quiet and shied away from any thanks or praise. . . . Underneath it all there was a heart of gold. He will definitely be missed.”

A memorial service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Monday at Pierce Brothers Griffin Chapel, Camarillo. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.

Hueg is survived by his wife, Joyce Hueg, of Camarillo; a brother, Herb Hueg of Dana Point; and two nephews.
