Mahony Returns

Cardinal Roger Mahony, who hails from North Hollywood, will be back at his home parish today. . . . The cardinal is scheduled to celebrate Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Church at 1 p.m. The church, at Lankershim Boulevard and Moorpark Street, is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Mahony has special ties to St. Charles. He attended school there and his parents were married there.

Special Masses

And while worshipers at St. Charles are marking their church’s anniversary, the Los Angeles Archdiocese is beginning to prepare for the “year 2000 and the dawning of the Third Millennium of the Church’s history.” Among the special services planned today is a 4 p.m. Mass at the San Fernando Mission. But don’t drive to San Fernando. . . . The mission is technically in Mission Hills, 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd.

Taxing Times

Glendale could lose $2.8 million, the Los Angeles County library system $9 million. Such are the possible aftershocks from the recent approval of the anti-tax Proposition 218 (B1). The measure requires voter approval for most ongoing assessments. . . . One of the few lucky cities: Santa Clarita. The 9-year-old city hasn’t had to rely on assessments so it doesn’t anticipate any side effects from 218--at least not immediately.
