Penn State Wins With Late Kick

Brett Conway’s 30-yard field goal with 12 seconds left Saturday gave No. 7 Penn State a 32-29 Big Ten Conference victory over Michigan State at State College, Pa., that strengthened its chances for an alliance bowl berth.

Chris Gardner had missed a chance to give Michigan State the lead on the previous possession when his 33-yard field goal attempt went wide left. Penn State then consumed 4:15 with an 11-play, 67-yard drive that set up Conway’s game-winner.

Penn State, 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten, won its fourth game in a row over Michigan State (6-5, 5-3). The game had four lead changes and two ties.

Penn State’s Curtis Enis carried 28 times for 165 yards and a touchdown, and Aaron Harris had three touchdowns.

No. 24 Iowa 43, Minnesota 24--The Gophers rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the game but then collapsed during a 1:55 span of the third quarter at Minneapolis, as the Hawkeyes (8-3, 6-2) reeled off three touchdowns and a field goal to ruin Coach Jim Wacker’s sendoff. Wacker is retiring after a 37-year college coaching career.

Sedrick Shaw and Tim Dwight scored two touchdowns apiece for Iowa (8-3, 6-2).

Wacker, who resigned 12 days ago after five dismal seasons, leaves with a 160-130-3 record in 26 seasons as a head coach. But he was just 16-39 with the Gophers, losing 24 of his last 27 Big Ten games and finished this season 4-7 and 1-7.

Wisconsin 35, Illinois 15--Freshman Ron Dayne ran for 289 yards and four touchdowns in 41 carries at Champaign, Ill., in Lou Tepper’s last game as Illini coach.

Dayne scored on runs of 54, 30, 23 and 19 yards for the Badgers (6-5, 3-5) kept their bowl hopes alive with the victory.

Illinois (2-9, 1-7) had its worst season in 15 years. Tepper, fired two weeks ago, was 25-31-2 in five seasons at the school.

A bright spot for Illinois was Robert Holcombe, who broke Jim Grabowski’s 1965 single-season rushing record of 1,258 yards in the first half. Holcombe, who did not play the second half because of a shoulder injury, had 61 yards to bring his season total to 1,281.

Indiana 33, Purdue 16--Alex Smith rushed for two touchdowns and the Hoosiers had interception and blocked punt returns for scores at West Lafayette, Ind.

A fourth-quarter Purdue punt was blocked by Nathan Davis, who returned it 59 yards for a touchdown. Kywin Supernaw had an interception return of 13 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

It was the final game for both Bill Mallory, who was fired three weeks ago, and Purdue’s Jim Colletto, who resigned four days later.

The victory snapped losing streaks of eight games overall and 15 games in the Big Ten for the Hoosiers (3-8, 1-7).

Purdue finished 3-8 and 2-6.
