Council to Discuss Antenna Regulations
The City Council today will discuss proposed regulations for companies erecting wireless telecommunications facilities in the city.
The proposed changes to the zoning and local coastal codes would provide stricter regulations on where telecommunications companies can place their equipment.
In the last two months, the Planning Commission and City Council have received requests for permits by several companies, including Pacific Bell Mobile Services and Cox Communications.
Pacific Bell and Cox were granted permits to install antenna systems on the side of a South Coast Water District water tank reservoir at 32000 Caribbean Drive. Residents argued that the telecommunications system could be a health risk, lower real estate values and would be an eyesore in the community.
“You don’t put one smack in the middle of a neighborhood,” Monarch Beach resident Jeff Shirkani said. “I don’t think the city has done their best to protect the residents.”
The proposed regulations include establishing a minimum distance between telecommunications antennas and residential property lines and camouflaging the equipment.
