Cal Stuns Iowa to Make Braun a Winner in Debut

Ed Gray scored 20 points to lead four California players in double figures Monday night as the Bears gave new Coach Ben Braun a 75-59 victory over undermanned Iowa in the Maui Invitational.

The Bears (1-0) will face No. 2 Kansas in one semifinal today. The other semifinal has No. 17 Massachusetts playing Virginia.

California, in a rebuilding mode under Braun, led, 41-22, at the half and never looked back, although the Hawkeyes (1-1) did climb within 65-56 with 3:22 left.

But the Bears went on a 20-3 run to finish the game.

Sean Marks added a career-high 15 points for the Bears.

No. 2 Kansas 82, Louisiana State 53--Scoring the game’s first 18 points en route to an early 25-5 lead, the Jayhawks (2-0) got 23 points from Raef LaFrentz and rolled to a victory over the Tigers (1-1) in the Maui Invitational.

No. 17 Massachusetts 59, Chaminade 48--Tyrone Weeks scored 19 points and Carmelo Travieso had 16, giving Coach James Flint a victory in his debut with the Minutemen in the Maui Invitational.

No. 14 North Carolina 86, Richmond 75--Shammond Williams scored eight points in a key second-half run and Antawn Jamison added 12 in the final 7:22 as the Tar Heels (1-1) struggled to beat the Spiders (1-1) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

No. 3 Wake Forest 86, The Citadel 52--Tim Duncan had 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Deacon Demons (2-0) blew past the Bulldogs (0-1) at Charleston, S.C.

No. 23 Boston College 82, New Hampshire 40--Danya Abrams scored 16 points before leaving because of a bruised knee as the Eagles (2-0) trounced the Wildcats (1-1) at Boston.
