The Holidays, Sans the Risk

Share

Most burn injuries occur at home, and the winter presents more opportunity for burn-related accidents. Holiday decorations alone account for thousands of burns each year, says the California-based Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. To reduce the risk:

* Buy a fresh, moist Christmas tree with a deep green color. Water it daily.

* Never leave a burning candle unattended and keep it away from decorations, children and pets.

* Do not overload electrical outlets and never run cords under carpets, doorjambs, behind radiators or across walkways.

* Purchase only UL-approved lights, and turn them off when leaving the house or going to bed.

* Always keep heat sources--such as space heaters--away from bedding, curtains and children. Purchase heaters that shut off when tipped over.

* Be aware of loose-fitting clothing and proximity to heat sources, especially among children and the elderly.

* Be careful not to block your escape routes with a Christmas tree or rearranged furniture.
