Death Penalty Sought for Murder Suspect

The district attorney will seek the death penalty in the case of accused murderer Alan Brett Holland, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
Holland, a 29-year-old drifter who most recently lived in Hollywood, is charged with murder in the shooting of 65-year-old Mildred Wilson in July during an alleged robbery and carjacking at a Ventura shopping center.
Prosecutors say Holland fatally shot Wilson after trying to take her purse, and then sped away in her car, leaving the Oxnard woman collapsed from a single gunshot wound in a parking lot planter.
The Ventura County Grand Jury indicted Holland on murder charges in August. The charges include special circumstances for carjacking and robbery, which make Holland eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
Holland, who is being held at Ventura County Jail without bail, has pleaded not guilty. His trial is expected to begin next spring.
