Pepperdine Defeats UCLA for First Time Since 1979

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team ended its season in style, defeating UCLA for the first time since 1979 with a 8-15, 15-11, 15-6, 15-13 victory Tuesday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

Nicole Sanderson had 27 kills and Kim Ward added 16 for the Waves (13-11), who snapped a 25-match losing streak against the Bruins (17-13).

Kara Milling had 13 kills for UCLA.

Pepperdine took a 10-3 lead in the final game before UCLA came back to take a 13-12 advantage. The Waves recovered and scored the final three points of the match.

Junior setter Becci Roehl had 66 assists and a career-high 22 digs for Pepperdine.

Moorpark d. San Bernardino Valley, 13-15, 10-15, 15-10, 16-14, 15-10--Kristin Lee had 30 kills for the Raiders in a Southern Regional at Moorpark.

Michele Capuano added 19 kills and Julie Watson had 59 assists for the Raiders.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 79, Chapman 69--The Kingsmen (3-0) never trailed in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran.

Brian Capella came off the bench to get 18 points and nine rebounds, guard Chris Whitfield added 17 points for Cal Lutheran and center Mike McGill scored 15 points.

Whitfield made three of five three-point shots.

Forward Greg Evans scored 13 points for Chapman (2-1).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Valley 83, Hancock 67--Bahaneh Maani came off the bench to score 17 points for the Monarchs, who led by as many as 25 points in the second half of a nonconference game at Hancock.

Shawanda Hotchkiss had 16 points, and Lisa Nielsen had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Valley (3-2).

Snoopy Seymore had 19 points for Hancock.

Riverside 79, Antelope Valley 77--Stacey Hartwell scored 21 points in a losing effort for the Marauders in a nonconference game at Riverside.

Antelope Valley (2-4) was victimized by 37 turnovers, including 14 by Chanel Edwards, who scored 15 points.

Katie Glenn scored 25 points and Lori Pickering added 23--including six three-pointers--for Riverside (3-1).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Chatsworth 76, North Hollywood 71--Harold Shevlin scored 22 points and Monte McFarland added 17 for the Chancellors in a nonconference opener against the Sheiks at Chatsworth.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 1, Ventura 0 (OT)--Jessica Funke scored on a penalty kick in the 116th minute to lift Orange Coast to a first-round victory in a Southern California Regional match.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Moorpark 3, Fillmore 0--Kaila Trejos, Elizabeth Christensen and Kelly Weaver scored for the Musketeers in a nonleague opener at Fillmore. Goalie Beth Skhal had one save for Moorpark.
