Duck update--Today’s game is a rare 1 p.m. start because of the holiday weekend. The Ducks’ three-game unbeaten streak was ended by a 3-2 loss to St. Louis on Wednesday, but the Ducks seem back on track after a wretched start. Their first game against Chicago this season, a 2-0 victory on Oct. 9 with Mikhail Shtalenkov in goal, was one of the Ducks’ few solid defensive games during the early part of the season--the only time in their first eight games they held an opponent to fewer than four goals. Teemu Selanne’s nine-game point streak ended Wednesday, but he has scored at least an assist in 12 of the last 15 games. Paul Kariya has at least one point in nine of the 11 games in which he has appeared.

Blackhawk update--They are nearing the end of a six-game, two-week trip that concludes Saturday against the Kings. A 3-2 loss to San Jose on Wednesday left the Blackhawks disappointed and put their season record at .500. Defenseman Chris Chelios said the team is “playing soft,” and Coach Craig Hartsburg called the team’s performance against San Jose “lethargic and dumb.” Right wing Tony Amonte has scored seven goals in his last five games and is among the league leaders with 16. (Pittsburgh’s Jaromir Jagr leads the NHL with 18.) However, no other Blackhawk has more than six.
