Sprucing Up--If you’re thinking of a green holiday this year, Bob Guthridge, president of the California Christmas Tree Growers, says real, cut trees are a sound choice for the environment. For every tree harvested, two or three new trees are planted in its place, and young trees release more oxygen than older trees, he says. When the festivities are over, the tree can be recycled in a number of ways:

* The trunk and branches can be used as mulch for gardens, parks or animal stalls. Check with the local department of public works for information on mulching programs.

* Some communities use Christmas trees to make effective sand and soil erosion barriers, especially at beaches and on river beds. Trees sunk into private fish ponds make refuge and feeding areas for fish.

* Before recycling, trees can be used to make bird feeders. Use orange slices, suet and seeds to attract birds.

They will construct a food chain and participate in outdoor activities. The workshop is for two age groups: 4 to 6 and 7 to 12. Hours are 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the museum, 3101 W. Harvard St., Santa Ana. Cost is $5 for museum members and $7 for nonmembers. Reservations are recommended. (714) 540-0404.
