Four-Star Films : ‘Death in Venice’
Luchino Visconti’s chillingly lovely, opulent, angst-ridden adaptation of the Thomas Mann novella about obsessive love tells of the repressed passion of an aging artist named Aschenbach for a beautiful boy he sights on the Venice beach, during a time of plague. In Visconti’s conception, Aschenbach is actually composer Gustav Mahler--whose haunting Fifth Symphony echoes despairingly on the soundtrack. With Dirk Bogarde (left) and Bjorn Andresen (as the duo), Marisa Berenson (right) and Silvana Mangano (Cinemax Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.).
