Three grants totaling $18,000 have been given to Caregivers: Volunteers Assisting the Elderly.

The grants come to the Ventura group from the Swift Memorial Health Care Foundation, the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation and the FHP Foundation.

The Swift foundation gave $3,000 that will be used for operating expenses in Santa Paula. The other two gifts will help cover overall expenses.

According to Caregivers Executive Director Pat Meredith, the organization’s 205 to 215 volunteers provide transportation, light housekeeping and other assistance to about 250 elderly county residents. “A lot of the need is transportation,” she said. Many clients have no other way to get to medical and dental appointments, and other errands.

Including Meredith, there are two full-time staff members and two part-time staffers. She said the grants account for about 12% of the budget, which is also funded by special events and regular donations.
