District to Add 31 Portable Classrooms

Squeezed by efforts to reduce class sizes, the Moorpark Unified School District will add 31 portable classrooms in January.
The classrooms should be in place at Arroyo West, Campus Canyon, Mountain Meadows and Peach Hill schools by the start of the spring semester, said school board member David Pollock.
The extra space will allow administrators to carry out plans to put no more than 20 students in each class in the primary grades, part of a state initiative to improve education.
Eleven of the portable classrooms are currently located at Chaparral Middle School and have been in use during renovations at the school this fall. Those portables will be relocated.
Construction bids for the project, including pouring concrete pads and running utility lines to the portables, have ranged from about $90,000 to more than $400,000, board President Clint Harper said. The board agreed Tuesday to let district Supt. Tom Duffy select the construction company that will perform the work.
