Palestinian Jail Guard Is Held in Prisoner’s Shooting Death

JERICHO, West Bank — A Palestinian jail guard has been arrested and faces charges for allegedly shooting and killing a Palestinian detainee who had been held for almost two years without trial.
Rashid Fityani, 25, was killed late Tuesday, Bassam Eid, the head of the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group, said Wednesday.
Fityani’s mother, Suhaila, said police told her that her son had struck a guard after the guard insulted him. She said police told her the guard shot and killed her son.
Jibril Rajoub, Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat’s West Bank security chief, said the guard had been arrested and would be charged.
