Sobriety Checkpoint to Be Run by Deputies, but It Was City’s Idea

Unlike most sobriety checks, a traffic stop being conducted tonight wasn’t instigated by law enforcement officers.

Though sheriff’s deputies will be the ones halting vehicles on Moulton Parkway southbound near Lake Forest Drive from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., the idea came from city officials.

With prompting from Mayor Randal J. Bressette, the city staff came up with money from a federal grant to pay for tonight’s check and another next year.

“I’m very interested in ensuring that the public is well acquainted with the hazards of driving while impaired,” Bressette said. “This is more about public education than catching drunks, although catching drunks is a good thing.”

Every driver passing through the checkpoint will receive a pamphlet discussing the dangers of drinking and driving.
