Baylor Stages Late Rally to Defeat UC Irvine, 68-46

Amy Alcala made her final six shots as Baylor defeated UC Irvine, 68-46, Thursday night in a nonconference women’s basketball game at UC Irvine. Alcala finished with 18 points and five steals.

The Anteaters (2-2) led, 30-23, early in the second half, but Baylor, led by Alcala and Nicole Palmer, went on a 24-6 run to lead by 11 with 8:21 remaining. Palmer scored 16 points and had seven rebounds for Baylor (4-2).

Leticia Oseguera scored 14 points and had seven rebounds for UC Irvine.

In the Redlands men’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 77, Menlo 55--Toby Curto scored 14 points and Peter Sverkos had 10 rebounds for Chapman. The Panthers play Cal Baptist at 6 p.m. today in the second round.

UC San Diego 88, Pacific Christian 70--Charles Henderson scored 18 points for Pacific Christian. Axel Margaritha added nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

In women’s basketball:

Cal Lutheran 72, Pacific Christian 52--Nicole Kurota and Kerry Massey each scored 15 points for Pacific Christian (3-7) in the loss.

Southern California College 92, La Sierra 25--Gina Jojola scored 24 points and was 11 of 16 from the field for Southern California College. Angela Minor scored 12 points for the Vanguards.

In Speedo Cup swimming:

Stanford men lead--Stanford’s men took a commanding lead in the first day of competition at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Stanford, which leads with a score of 583.5, was led by Tom Wilkens and Sabir Muhammad, who placed first in the 200 individual medley (1:49.59) and the 50 freestyle (20.79), respectively.

Brigham Young is in second place with 268.5 points and UC Santa Barbara in third with 229.

On the women’s side, UCLA leads the field with a score of 484. The Bruins’ 200 freestyle relay team finished first in 1:33.02. Keiko Price also had a first-place finish for UCLA in the 50 freestyle (23.12). California is in second place with 277 points and Nevada is in third with 187.
