Campaign’s Fate Is Up to Council

Share

Newport Beach restaurants are now advertising on local cable-TV channels, and the Marine Avenue merchants on Balboa Island have new brochures touting their shops, two results of a campaign to boost business.

On Monday, the City Council will review a report from merchants on the success of business improvement districts established a year ago to draw more visitors to Balboa Island and restaurants across Newport Beach.

The council will also decide whether to renew the program, which is funded by an assessment members pay.

“We all feel it really did improve the business,” said John Noyes, who owns a jewelry store on Marine Avenue on Balboa Island and is a newly elected council member.

Dan Marcheano, who heads the Newport Beach Restaurant Assn., said the results of the program’s first year have been good:

“A lot of people think there has been a difference this year in our business, and we look forward to making more of a difference in the years to come.”

The council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 3300 W. Newport Blvd. Information: (714) 644-3017.
