Council to Consider Development Proposal

After being trimmed by 145 units this week, a proposal for a controversial project near Los Altos and Crown Valley Parkway will go to the City Council on Monday.

The city’s staff is recommending that the issue be continued to Dec. 16 so that council members can gather additional economic and traffic information on the project, which was first proposed for 525 units but revised to 380 units by the Planning Commission this week.

Mayor Sherri M. Butterfield said Friday that she favors the delay, adding that the reduction in units to be built was proposed by the site owner, Mission Viejo Co., and is a positive step.

“To my way of thinking, it was a good thing to do,” Butterfield said. “Many of the impacts residents have discussed have to do with numbers.”

Residents living near the project site have complained that the development would result in an unacceptable increase in traffic and lead to school overcrowding.

The proposal before the council would rezone the property to allow high density residential construction on the 20-acre site.

The council will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 25909 Pala. Information: (714) 470-3000.
