Two people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at the latest sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint held by Oxnard and Port Hueneme police, authorities said Saturday.

Police began stopping cars at 7 p.m. Friday and continued until 4 a.m. Saturday at Victoria Avenue and 5th Street, near the Oxnard Airport.

More than 1,000 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Nine people were given field sobriety tests and two of them were arrested, said Oxnard Traffic Officer Robert Shank.

Ten drivers were cited for license violations, and 10 vehicles were impounded because the drivers were either impaired or did not have a license, Shank said.

This was the 12th checkpoint of the year in Oxnard and the 25th since the Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint Program began in 1994.

Shank said in 1997 and 1998, the police departments in Oxnard and Port Hueneme will attempt to reduce the number of accidents caused by impaired drivers by holding at least two checkpoints per month.
