Rain to Pelt Valley; Sunny by Wednesday

At least an inch of rain will fall on the San Fernando Valley starting this afternoon and continue into Tuesday, weather forecasters said.

“Another winter storm is moving in,” said Bruce Rockwell, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. “It’s going to be stronger than the last couple.”

Forecasters predict up to four inches of rain in foothill and mountain regions.

The storm will at first bring warm, moist air from Hawaii. But as a low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska takes over, snow levels will likely drop from 7,000 to 8,000 feet on Monday to 5,500 feet by Tuesday.

The storm could generate 8 to 10 inches of snow in some areas, but with rain hitting the ground first, conditions are not likely to be good for skiing.

“It may be a little optimistic to think about that yet,” Rockwell said.

By Wednesday, skies will be sunny again with winds returning. “Sometimes, offshore winds develop after these storms come through,” Rockwell said.

High temperatures across the Valley Monday will be in the mid-60s.
