Vote Count in Ghana Favoring President

President Jerry J. Rawlings, who twice seized power in this West African nation, was on course to become the first leader in its history to win reelection, provisional results suggested Monday.

With more than 60% of results in from Saturday’s vote, the National Election Commission credited Rawlings with 54.3% of the ballots.

His closest opponent, John Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party, had 42.9%.

In the early returns for the contest to fill 200 parliament seats, Rawlings’ National Democratic Congress party led with 73.
