U.S. Poll Watchers to Monitor Runoff

The Justice Department sent federal poll watchers to monitor a runoff election today in a Houston-area congressional district amid claims that minorities were harassed by white poll watchers in early voting that ended last week. Supporters of Democrat Nick Lampson sought the monitors, alleging that blacks were harassed and likely Republican voters were enticed to the polls by offers of free turkeys and hams in the 9th district, which stretches from east Houston to the Louisiana border.
