Growth Spurt: A state report ranks Cal State Northridge tops among CSU campuses in attracting new students. . . . The student body grew by 2,174 this fall, reaching a total of 27,189. That nearly equals the enrollment level prior to the January 1994 earthquake. CSUN is again the state system’s fourth-largest campus.

New Faces: CSUN is also more diverse. About 47% of the students are white, 25% Latino, 17% Asian American, 9% Black and 1% Native American. . . . “It’s the reality of Southern California,” said a spokeswoman. “We make phone calls to students in this area, we send postcards. We’ve really stepped up recruitment.”

Helpful Shove: A small manufacturer of fasteners, Avibank Manufacturing, is moving part of its Burbank facility, along with 200 jobs, to North Hollywood. But why? . . . Because Burbank ignored the company’s needs? Because Los Angeles courted the company with promises of lower utility rates and tax credits? There are several scenarios. Let’s just say Burbank officials aren’t too pleased and L.A. and the company like the deal. “Mayor Riordan’s office did a really good job,” said a company official.

Birthday Book: A new book, “The Centennial History of Griffith Park,” has arrived just in time for the park’s 100th birthday on Monday. . . . It was a labor of love for author Mike Eberts: “The city is so far-flung that people in places like Chatsworth and San Pedro may forget about the park.”
