Inner-City Children Get Visit From Santa, Gifts

Share

More than 500 children lined up at Estrada Courts housing project in Boyle Heights on Monday eagerly waiting for Santa to bring them Christmas gifts.

“It’s well worth the wait,” Maria Castellanos said just after her 2-year-old grandson, Joshua, hopped off Santa’s lap. “There’s so much here for him . . . toys, food, balloons. I like it all.”

The children were treated to clowns, decorated sugar cookies, photos and other gifts as part of the Feliz Navidad Project. The nonprofit project was formed nine years ago through Councilman Richard Alatorre’s office to serve low-income families at housing projects.

This year more than $120,000 worth of volleyballs, dolls and other donated toys were handed out to more than 8,000 children at six housing projects.
