Residents will start getting a slight reduction in their waste disposal rates starting Jan. 1, based on a new contract the city signed with Solag Disposal Inc. Under the agreement, which the City Council approved this week, residents could save from 21 cents to $2.65 a month in their trash hauling bills.
“I think it’s a win for the city of San Juan,” Councilman Wyatt Hart said of the new contract.
Commercial rates also will be reduced, with businesses expected to save from $5.02 to $17.75 a month. The contract also waives the next three scheduled cost-of-living increases Solag had planned, which would have raised commercial trash rates about 7%.
The city and Solag previously had a five-year deal. Solag officials said that by extending the agreement to 10 years, they could refinance the company’s equipment and pass those savings on to the customer.
