Juan Lazcano and Danny Lujan, who have extensive amateur experience but only 30 professional bouts between them, will fight for the World Boxing Federation lightweight title tonight at the Reseda Country Club.

The 12-round main event will highlight a seven-bout card that includes heavyweights Lance Whitaker of Granada Hills and Jimmy Buffo of North Hollywood in separate matchups.

Lazcano, 21, a former Texas Golden Gloves state champion, is 14-1 with 10 knockouts and has won his last seven bouts. Lazcano was 82-3 as an amateur before turning pro in 1993.

Lujan, 24, a native of Salinas, is 11-3-1 with six knockouts. He was 106-24 before turning pro two years ago. Lujan won a four-round unanimous decision over Chuck Goossen of North Hollywood at the Country Club in 1994.

“All I know about the guy is that he hits,” Lujan said. “I can box beautifully. But I also like to get in there and brawl once in awhile.”

Said Lazcano: “I’ve been sparring with all kinds of fighters--southpaws, tall guys, short guys, brawlers, boxers. . . . I’ve worked very hard for this fight and I’m taking it very seriously.”

Whitaker will try to improve on his 4-0 record--all knockout victories, three in the first round--in a four-round fight with Marcos Dickson, 2-4, of Sacramento. Whitaker is coming off a second-round knockout of Rick Phillips last month in Indio.

Trainer Joe Goossen said 1997 will be a busy year for Whitaker, whom he began training this year.

“If we keep up this pace, he’ll end up with another 10 to 14 fights over the year,” Goossen said. “We’ll fight twice a month, if possible.”

Buffo, a former entry in the World’s Toughest Man competition, will make his professional debut in a four-round bout against Lyle Barron (4-2) of Oklahoma.
