Memorable ‘Night’ More Than Nostalgia

Share

The quartet of singers and hoofers sashaying through classic American tunes of the ‘30s and ‘40s in “The All Night Strut” have every reason to hold their heads at a jaunty angle.

Newly relocated from the Cinegrill to a dedicated stage at the Tiffany Theater, this scintillating revue serves up period flair without missing a beat. From the opening strains of “Chattanooga Choo Choo” to the breezy farewell, “Lullaby of Broadway,” familiar hits blend with rediscovered chestnuts in a celebration of the era’s best sensibilities: enthusiastic abandon (“In the Mood,” “Fascinating Rhythm” and “Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar”), romantic idealism (“Operator”) and wistful crooning (“A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square”) by turns. A well-crafted wartime medley evokes the hope, illusion and courage that somehow got the country through dark times.

The two holdover cast members, Steve Gideon and Lance Roberts, are joined by Andrea Chamberlain and Sharon Young-Fuller, who look and sound as if they’ve been performing these songs all their lives. Creator-director-choreographer Fran Charnas infuses the evening with enough hyper-athleticism and showmanship to make this more than a nostalgic skip down memory lane. It’s enough to captivate an audience of any age.
