Coliseum Is Site of Soccer Event

A doubleheader Sunday, Jan. 5, will kick off the inaugural Los Angeles Coliseum Cup soccer tournament, which features first-division teams from Mexico and Central America.

Ten matches will be played in the tournament--all at the Coliseum--capped by the championship match, probably in early May, spokesman Jon Lee said Thursday.

In the tournament-opening doubleheader, Chivas of Guadalajara faces Aguila of El Salvador at 4 p.m. Necaxa of Mexico plays Atlante of Mexico in the second game.

Other teams include Cruz Azul, Atlas and America, all of Mexico, and Alianza of El Salvador.

Two groups of four teams will play six preliminary matches, the semifinals, a third-place match and a championship match.
