School Board Begins Search for New Chief

The Bonita Unified School District board said Friday that it has hired a search consultant to find a new superintendent as Ron Raya remains on paid leave amid allegations of sexual harassment.

The Board of Education, in a special session Thursday afternoon, decided to hire the California School Boards Assn. to conduct a search for a replacement for Raya. Board members say they hope to hire a new superintendent by April to replace interim Supt. Stanley G. Oswalt.

Raya was placed on administrative leave because of unspecified allegations that school officials refused to detail, citing employee confidentiality.

But last month, the district, which includes schools in La Verne and San Dimas, released a claim by Lorna Horton, assistant superintendent of instruction, alleging that Raya put a bag of condoms on her desk, made sexual remarks and engaged in nonconsensual touching. Horton’s claim was filed Oct. 17 along with one by Assistant Supt. Peter M. Schiff in which he alleged that Raya made false comments about him to prospective employers. Raya has not commented on the allegations.
