Mellanby Clicks for Panthers

Scott Mellanby scored two power-play goals and set up a late insurance score as the Florida Panthers beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-1, Friday night at Chicago.

Radek Dvorak also scored as Florida snapped a four-game road losing streak. Meanwhile, Panther goaltender Mark Fitzpatrick stopped 34 of 35 Chicago shots.

Mellanby took over the team lead in goals with his 13th and 14th of the season.

Sergei Krivokrasov scored for the Blackhawks.

Vancouver 3, Detroit 2--Martin Gelinas scored the winner and assisted on another goal to spark the Canucks at Vancouver.

The loss left the Red Wings winless in their last three games.

Lonny Bohonos and Adrian Aucoin also scored for Vancouver. Steve Yzerman and Viacheslov Fetisov scored for Detroit and Brendan Shanahan contributed two assists.

Dallas 4, Hartford 1-- Arturs Irbe stopped 30 shots and former Whaler captain Pat Verbeek set up three goals as the Stars rolled to their league-leading 11th road victory in the game at Hartford.

Richard Matvichuk, Craig Ludwig, Greg Adams and Dave Reid scored for Dallas.

The Stars extended their unbeaten streak to six (4-0-2) dating to Dec. 8.

Washington 3, San Jose 2--Phil Housley broke a tie with 2:27 remaining in the third period as the Capitals halted a seven-game winless streak at Landover, Md.

Housley beat San Jose goaltender Chris Terreri for his seventh goal after taking a pass in the slot from Dale Hunter.

Sergei Gonchar scored twice for the Capitals and goaltender Jim Carey made 19 saves to break his five-game losing streak, a career high.

Phoenix 5, Toronto 2--Keith Tkachuk scored the last two goals for the Coyotes, who won their fourth in a row and matched their season-high scoring output in the game at Phoenix.

Jeremy Roenick, hitting his stride after missing 10 games because of holdout or injury, assisted on the go-ahead goal and got another to send the Coyotes to a 3-1 lead in the second period.

Tkachuk got his 17th goal with 10:43 left in the second when he deflected a slap shot by Brad McCrimmon.

New Jersey 3, Edmonton 2--Defenseman Scott Stevens scored his first goal of the season at 13:14 of the third period to lift the Devils to victory at Edmonton.

Stevens got the puck off a faceoff and slapped a low shot past goaltender Curtis Joseph.
