Legal Hangovers Can Follow Yule Parties

Holiday parties can bring about horrific lawsuits if care is not exercised, a countywide citizens’ group has warned.

“Unfortunately, even Christmas isn’t safe from lawsuits,” said Chris Panaro, chairman of Orange County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse.

Panaro urged county residents to take steps to avoid possible litigation from yuletide parties.

“While it is the season to be jolly, it is also the season for alcohol-related accidents,” Panaro said. “Before having your holiday party, it’s a good idea to be familiar with social host liability.”

He noted that some courts have held party hosts liable for accidents caused by drunken guests who were driving home.

“If you are hosting a holiday party and you are serving alcohol, you should do so with great care,” Panaro said.

Among tips suggested by the citizens’ group for safer holiday parties:

* Plan transportation, including some designated drivers.

* Have ample and appealing nonalcoholic beverages for designated drivers.

* Consider having a bus service for your employees if there is an office party.

* Avoid having a self-service bar. Use a bartender who is experienced in identifying underage drinkers and intoxicated guests.

* Halt the flow of alcoholic beverages long before the party ends.

* Take action if a guest overindulges, and do not let the guest attempt to drive.

“We urge people to be personally responsible for helping their guests get home safely,” Panaro said.

“Following these tips will help keep holiday parties safe, may help prevent an accident, and keep everyone from lawsuits.”
