Weak Vaccine Used in Students’ Flu Shots
Students and staff members who received flu shots at Moorpark College have been sent notices that their shots were among those recalled nationally because of weakened vaccine, along with a reminder that only high-risk individuals need be revaccinated.
In early November, drug manufacturer Parke, Davis & Co. voluntarily recalled 11 lots of its flu vaccine because of “reduced potency” in the A/Nanchang component of the vaccine.
Healthy individuals do not need to be revaccinated. But those considered high risk because of age or chronic medical conditions should be.
It’s not known how many of the people vaccinated through the student health center at Moorpark College will be affected. The center is closed because of the holiday.
According to Lin Glusac, immunization coordinator for the Ventura County Public Health Department, none of the vaccines distributed through the public health offices or at several county hospitals were from Parke, Davis & Co. Shots given out at Longs drugstores by the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Assn. were also not affected by the recall.
