Jewish Group Brightens Christmas
More than 400 people participated in the Jewish Federation’s third annual “Tikkun Volunteer Day,” performing charitable works around Los Angeles.
“We don’t celebrate Christmas,” said Phyllis Folb, federation spokeswoman, “But this gives us an opportunity to provide gifts, entertainment and meals for the lonely and homeless on our day off for the Christmas holiday.”
Volunteers gave dancing lessons at homes for the aged, dished out a meal to police emergency dispatchers and delivered food to young cancer patients at the Ronald McDonald House in Hollywood.
“The smiles and laughs from our audiences made it more than worthwhile,” Folb said.
At the Greater Bethany Community Center on South Hoover Street, food and toys were distributed to kids and families. At an Eastside homeless shelter, Proyecto Pastoral, the group sponsored a meal for 70 adults and children.
